Venice - Gulf of Mexico
Known as 'Tuna Town' - Louisiana's offshore capital where the Mississippi Delta meets the Gulf.

Depth & Structure
Offshore Gulf fishery out of the Mississippi River Delta passes. Fall/winter yellowfin are reported hunting bait in roughly 200-400 ft of water (sometimes far deeper, occasionally as shallow as ~60 ft in winter), 12-30 miles out of South Pass; spring/summer fish move to large floating petroleum platforms 40-65 miles offshore in deep open Gulf water.
Best Lures
Trolling lures and rigged natural baits around floating platforms; topwater baits on fall/winter tuna feeding on bait balls; vertical diamond jigs at night around lit platforms; chunking (cut-bait slick) presentations behind rigs and working trawlers.
Best Baits
Live bait is central: hardtails (blue runners), scad and threadfin herring caught on small bait-catching rigs around platforms, plus fresh/cut bait for chunking. Captains downsize leaders and hooks when tuna are finicky in clear water.
Gear to Bring
Charter-class offshore tackle — this is not a bring-your-own light-tackle fishery. Reported captain tackle starts at 50-pound-class rods with heavy leader for tuna, with lighter presentations only as a deliberate downsize; expect the charter to supply the heavy trolling/chunking gear.
Local Tips
["Season split reported by Venice captains: mid-October through March the big yellowfin come closer inshore (the winter 'Lump' pattern); late spring through summer the fleet runs farther to the deepwater floaters.", "Clean green/blue water fishes far better…
