Lake Erie - Western Basin
The western basin is billed the 'Walleye Capital of the World' and produces huge spring walleye runs.

Depth & Structure
Shallowest Great Lakes basin — water averages roughly 25-35 ft with extensive flats, weed beds, rocky reefs and island structure (Bass Islands, Kelleys). Spring walleye jigging is a 12-15 ft reef game; summer fish suspend over deeper open water and are also taken in 20-30 ft drifts.
Best Lures
Hair jigs bounced on spring reefs; trolled crankbaits behind planer boards at 1.2-1.8 mph, plus spoons and nightcrawler harnesses on divers/lead-core for suspended summer fish; casting crankbaits on fall shallows/reefs.
Best Baits
Live bait is a core western basin pattern: live shiners and nightcrawlers for walleye (jigging, drifting harnesses and ice tip-ups), and live shiners/minnows on small jigs for yellow perch.
Gear to Bring
Boat trolling kit: long trolling rods, planer boards, divers/snap weights to reach suspended fish; a medium spinning setup for reef jigging; perch rigs are light spinning tackle. Charter fleets out of Port Clinton are the standard shortcut to the daily trolling program.
Local Tips
['Season split: jig the reefs in spring (April-May), troll planer boards over open water in summer, cast/jig shallower again in fall — dawn and dusk are the peak windows and the mid-morning bite often shuts down.', "Walleye feed looking up — trolled baits…
