Batten Kill River
One of America's storied wild brown trout streams, fished since the 1800s.

Depth & Structure
Generally shallow and narrow freestone river: upper river near Manchester is small with soft bottoms, small pools and a few deep runs and riffles (mostly brook trout); below Arlington it widens into long riffle sections joining long pools, with a rocky, gravel bottom on the lower river.
Best Lures
Dry flies and nymphs matching the hatches — Hendrickson / red quill in early May, then March brown, blue-winged olives and blue quill, plus caddis, midges and sculpin patterns; precise, drag-free presentations are emphasised for these wild fish.
Best Baits
artificials primary
Gear to Bring
4-5 wt fly rod with very light tippets (per a Vermont fly guide roundup); waders — soft, muddy bottoms upriver and slippery rock/gravel downriver.
